Frequently Asked Questions
What is Pole Dancing?
Pole dancing is a combined form of dance, gymnastics and acrobatics on a vertical pole to perform tricks, spins, combos and inverts. For some its a dynamic hobby/workout they fall passionately addicted to, while others love to express their sensuality through dance or perform publicly for crowds or privately for their special someone. We welcome all dancers, regardless of the reason, to come dance at Wonderland.
Is Pole Dancing hard?
Pole is a full body workouts that is wonderful for any age, sex, size, strength or flexibility level.
Each class helps you build up more needed muscle, grip strength and conditions your skin to handle friction from the pole or hoop.
While aerial classes can be difficult, the improvements + growth you make are measurable! Each week you will find a movement pattern is easier than it was the previous class. Our instructors are all trained to support and spot a variety of moves to ensure all dancers can leave class feeling accomplished.
Many of us started with no dance experience or strength. We're here to support and encourage you!
If there's anything our Wonderland students are great at it’s cheering on peers and students as they accomplish things they didn't know they could.
What should I wear?
Pole:
For safety reasons pole dancers don’t wear a lot of clothing. Our ability to grip the pole during a trick or maneuver is entirely dependent on skin contact. No grip = fall to your death. Common grip points include Hand, Elbow, Armpit, Thigh, Knees and Torso.
We recommend dressing in layers over your intended class attire to avoid delays to class.
Beginner's Series: Pole 101 We recommend you wear tight fitting yoga or fitness shorts and a tank top. You'll need skin contact for gripping the pole in both your knee pit and armpit in this series.
All Pole Classes - You're welcome to wear yoga or pole specific shorts; however, we kindly ask you stick to bottoms designed for pole wear and not wear lingerie. Pole shorts have extra width coverage to ensure certain body parts stay covered while doing tricks/splits in the air. If you would prefer to cover up more of your skin there are specialized "sticky" leggings and tops made specifically for pole that can be purchased. Ask your instructor for recommendations, or send us a message to inquire!
No jewelry or fitness wristbands. Not only can you hurt yourself wearing jewelry, it will also damage the equipment.
Body lotions, oils, creams or gels of any kind are not recommended for 24 hours prior to your pole class.
Lotion = No Grip = Dangerous . We advise each student to wash their hands prior to class to help keep our equipment clean and help you have a better grip experience. Moisturizing on other days is encouraged!
We ask that you attend classes barefoot unless your instructor has given an instruction for you to bring and wear heels in class.
Please No Nudity. We respectfully ask that you keep your private areas covered at all times. Pasties or lingerie on their own are strictly prohibited.
Heels: Pole dancing heels (not regular street heels) are permitted at open pole. From time to time our instructors will invite their students to bring in their heels for class but we ask that you wait for their instruction before doing so.
If you do not own pole dancing heels we have some available for purchase or to rent at Wonderland. If you need help selecting your first pair your instructor would be happy to help. Explore our recommended heels.
Dance Classes: We suggest you wear leggings or leg warmers and knee pads during to protect your legs, along with a long sleeve shirt to protect your arms from rolling around on the floor. We also encourage you to bring & wear your pole dancing heels for dance classes.
Please avoid all lotions, oils, creams or gels for 24 hours prior to class. No jewelry or sports watches. We ask that practice barefoot unless otherwise instructed. Please refer to the "classes" page for more specific class wardrobe suggestions.
What will I need for my first class?
Beginner Series: Pole 101: We ask you to simply bring a bottle of water and we’ll provide the rest. You will receive a pole class cleaning kit and a hand grip aid at your first class to bring each time you come to class.
All other classes: We ask that you always bring a water bottle, your spray bottle filled with rubbing alcohol and a microfiber cloth to clean the pole/lyra of sweat and hand grip aids before, during and after class.
Am I too old to Pole Dance?
NEVER! You’ll never reach an age where physical exercise will go out of style and Pole Dancing is no exception.
At Wonderland you will never be asked or pushed to do anything you don’t feel comfortable doing. We ask our students to listen to their bodies and not push themselves farther than they are ready to go. Safety is our number one priority.
Everyone has their own journey to follow and we respect where you are in your story. You can expect each class to be filled with others of all different ages, sizes and shapes and ready to encourage, support and cheer you on.
Do I need to have upper body strength, flexibility or dance experience?
No. We ask you to come as you are and every class we’ll help you build the strength and flexibility necessary to advance safely. It’s a common misconception that those that pole dance were strong to begin with and that is simply untrue. Most of us were just like you and we worked at every class to get stronger and more capable to do what was being taught to us.
You do not need dance experience to pole dance. We teach you everything you need to know and lead you to more advanced moves when you’re ready to progress. Take your time and enjoy the process.
We do offer strength and conditioning classes for those students that would like to advance at a faster rate.
